One of the fundamental indicators of a site’s strength is the number of visits it is capable of drawing and how long it can keep them there. You may have heard of the term bounce rate, which is a metric that tracks the number of visitors that leave the page without spending a great deal of time on it. This could have a negative impact on your site’s ranking on Google. An easy way to urge users to spend more time on your site or have them re-visit is by responding to visitors’ comments by commenting on your WordPress blogs.
If you have a blog on your site, enabling comments is a great way to engage with your clients. This allows your clients to praise your work, which in itself should be reason enough, or ask questions without having to navigate to a contact us page. You may also use your responses as an opportunity to add internal links in your comments as a way of keeping potential clients on your site and reducing the bounce rate i.e. when visitors leave your page and navigate to another site. Most comments may be fairly generic note to thank you for sharing the information, but they can have a meaningful impact on your traffic. To these comments, a simple expression of gratitude will often suffice, but crafting your answers carefully to add other relevant information could also help other visitors. Responding (promptly) to comments also makes you looks professional and approachable as a photographer. You can enable alerts to ensure that you are notified whenever someone is commenting on your WordPress blog, so you can respond promptly.
Comments are not always positive and may not have a meaningful impact on your traffic or visitors, so it is important to take it in stride. Not all those who comment will agree with your point of view, so it is important that you accept their opinion and respond respectfully. Taking the time to respond to comments shows that you are investing time in reading it. If you keep your response to their comment short and relevant, it will be appreciated by the commenter.
Occasionally, someone might comment with remotely related info and a link back to their blog capitalising on your hard work to drive traffic to their site. While this seems somewhat unethical, it is not easy to police. The recommended action is to thank the commenter and perhaps visit the link and see if there is an opportunity to comment in kind. It is advisable to stay relevant to the topic of the blog and leave a link back to your site/blog.
Some comments may be inappropriate for your audience and you may be tempted to delete it. The use of colourful language may be one such reason to consider deleting a comment. De-escalation is the recommended course of action and you could delete any offensive content before thanking the reader for their opinion. You need to exercise caution when deleting comments or ignoring them as this has the potential to cause a backlash, tarnish your brand image and negatively impact your business in the long run.
That said, there are some cases when it is recommended – as is the case when it is spam. Spam can be identified by the lack of a full name or an odd-looking e-mail address and perhaps even a link to a completely irrelevant website. Thankfully, WordPress supports plugins that will help you remove these automatically and it is worth investing time in setting this up when you enable comments.
One of the best ways to promote commenting on your WordPress blog is by creating engaging content and perhaps ending with an open-ended question that allows readers to add their thoughts to your original piece.
